6b: Taking another stab at the agate/calcedony goblet. The bowl on this one went that same as the other. The stem is a solid cylinder, a twisty right bit, and then another solid cylinder. The twisty bit was a bit thicker on one side than the other and I had to take a heat to get all the twists in. The foot went well and was nice and thick. I made sure that it didn’t fold back again. For opening the goblet, I had to make sure to maintain thickness in the lip. Putting the goblet away is where it went wrong. The goblet fork wasn’t heated long enough and so the foot cracked from it. I think I’ll need to work with my assistant on listening to my directions. I had asked for the fork to have a little glow so it was definitely warm enough but that glow wasn’t there. #1000goblets#trytryagain#glass#glassblowing#goblet#chalice#merese#foot#venetian#swedish#agate#calcedony
I figure since calcedony was originally formulated as a imitation for agate, I should explore that route. Calcedony would sometimes be cold worked to reveal the striating in the glass. 6a: Because the plan is to cold work this piece, I’m going to be making it thick. I took 3 gathers for the bowl. I blew it out using a combination of Italian and Swedish techniques. This goblet will be shaped somewhat like a chalice so I put a slight taper on the sides and made the bottom almost flat. I dropped the solid stem right onto the bottom of the bowl. The foot is where I screwed up. I took the foot. Again it was thick and chunky but that’s perfect for this piece. After I cut the foot off the pipe, it folded down and tagged the stem. I wasn’t going to be able to dis it or hide it so I tossed the goblet into the recycle pile. I can’t say how many feet I’ve taken but this is a good reminder to me to always keep my eyes open. #1000goblets#trytryagain#glass#glassblowing#goblet#chalice#merese#foot#venetian#swedish#agate#calcedony
And finally, Stella Artois’ custom Tanzanian Chalice star. This project was easily one of the greatest highlights of my design / artistic career. To receive a phone call from an ad agency in New York and have them say... “We want your style, like the paintings and prints in your website...”. It’s one of those things that you always aim for, but never really think it’ll happen... Turn around time was like the cliche scenario... brief or approval comes Thursday eve or Friday morning and they want / ask for everything to be ready for presentation by Monday or Tuesday. No complaints here, cause this was the type of challenge I was ready and willing to make sure it came to fruition. On to the next one!
About 2 years ago around this time I was contacted by an agency in New York... Jones Knowles Ritchie (@jkrglobal) to do some custom illustrations for their client Stella Artois.
Every year Stella Artois teams up with Water.org with the goal of ending the global water crisis. Unfortunately, things fell through at the last stage, but I had a lot of fun creating these illustrations that were to represent Tanzania.

First Holy Communion season is coming up soon! Do you have anyone in your life who will be receiving Christ for the first time this Easter Season? How are you helping them to prepare? If you need a gift for this person to celebrate that beautiful moment, consider this Bread of Life rosary. It is made of light cocoa and cream pearls. The chalice center is the same on either side. A simple yet beautiful crucifix completes this rosary which offers thanksgiving for our Eucharistic Lord.
