All the work in the pool with paddles has definitely helped strengthen and stabilise these shoulders! Breakthrough with the yoga moves this morning to freshen and reenergise the body before the big race 🙌🏼💪🏽⚡️ #coachedbydgc
I currently have an athlete on a specific program for his first attempt at the 70.3 distance.
It is really refreshing as a coach that this athlete has no 'greed for numbers' within his training and doesn't depend on a bike computer or elaborate watch to supply data feedback or even for reference while riding and running.
Enter the time proven method of perceived exertion or 'train to feel' and so with this athlete there is no " I held 34 kmh" or " I was running at 4.45's or even " My heart rate was out of control"
When I ask him how his day or sessions went, I get " I felt really good over that 90k" or "My run was awesome and it was a really sustainable, could have kept going at that pace". This reveals that he is listening to his body and the way it is responding and reacting to the stimulus of each session and is not chasing numbers to hold just because an expensive piece of equipment or previous data says he should be able to and it is also all the feedback I need to produce and adjust his future weeks.
Recovery has also been as good as his training so this again tells me everything is running smoothly. The fact that I have also been present on a number session with him confirms it is all on track.
This athletes original statement to me was "I will happy to finish under 6 hours"
My vision for him is a little different. Watch this space ! 'Train to feel' Don't under estimate the value.
Another very lop sided tri this morning with 500 swim / 14.5k bike / 16k run. Extra 3 run laps added for a purpose. Its all relevant to my current training load and targeted event.
Some coaches say 'racing is the best training'. Do i agree ? Yes and no ! Is it relevant to your current situation? Is it the correct time for this stimulation ? Is the athlete disciplined enough to race as per instructions ? Will it produce the desired training effect ?
