EXERCISE TIP 🏋️♂️
The goblet front squat is a great exercise to incorporate into your routine to train your core while getting additional volume in on your legs. Holding the dumbbell out in front of you puts an enormous amount of stress on your core. —
Another way I like to use this exercise is when an individual doesn’t quite have the core strength to do a back squat, but they still need to squat, I’ll use this variation to build the core strength. —
You can chose to use a dumbbell or if your gym has heavy enough kettlebells they are great as well.
Add this exercise into your leg day for a little extra core and leg activation.
**WARNING long post and possibly TMI** The past month very few people knew about the unexpected brief medical crisis my family and I endured. By no means am I comparing my experience to those who are really suffering with acute or chronic illnesses but these past 4 weeks were not easy on Us.
In a nutshell, one morning I woke up with pain I cannot describe. As an athlete most my life, I feel confident in saying that I have a healthy relationship with pain. Its a part of sport and something I have partnered with for almost 30 years. However, that night and that pain I could not breathe through. I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t live with it. So we went to the ER and a CT scan later, they found sitting in my left Kidney was the Death Star.
The first response from the nurse, and backed up by the physician, was “some people swear that passing a stone is worse than childbirth!” Jennie and I laughed uncontrollably and then I died a little inside anticipating the worst sensation I am probably ever going to feel.
Fortunately I never had to go through that feeling. Unfortunately, something worse occurred. The stone shifted and since it was too large to pass, the Death Star decided to block my kidney and cause an infection which required another trip to the ER.
This time it became serious. If not treated, the blockage and subsequent infection could has caused permanent harm to my body so it was decided that I had to undergo an hour long procedure to release the blockage and a stent was implanted to keep my kidney functioning normally.
Living with the stent was no bueno. It caused constant cramping of the ureter (the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) and ongoing irritation which made be basically pee blood every day. Like I said, no bueno.
Fast forward to yesterday, Valentines Day 2019. I finally had the stone removed and for the first time in basically a month, Im comfortable. Minus a slight stinging sensation when I “go” the other symptoms I had have almost all disappeared. I finally feel like myself again.
What are the lessons I learned?
Everything is a learning experience and this one taught me three VERY important things. (Continued below)
