Of the many wonders that you can find inside the Vatican Museum is the breathtaking double helix staircase,a spiralling structure carved in stone by an architect from Tuscany,Donato Bramante.
The amazing thing about the “Bramante Staircase” is its shape: centuries before the DNA was discovered, Bramante created a staircase in the shape of a double helix, something its contemporaries had obviously never seen before.
His creation soon gained a huge popularity among the public. The purpose of this staircase, though, was very practical: it was built to accomodate even horses and mules carrying large items back and forth. It's design allowed large number of people and animals ascend and descend without interruptions.
So the next time you are in Rome and Vatican City is a part of your itinerary, don't miss out on this wonderful architecture, something that's hidden from the plain sight yet it inspires awe.
