I tend to focus my coaching on reinforcing the foundations we sometimes become lazy at maintaining or have bypassed for speed and distance. Build your foundation - your balance, head/body position, catch and hip rotation - to help prevent injury and get you towards your goals.
Putting effort into the foundations brings you to that infamous "effortless swimming." Swimming well comes down to simple physics and effort. Swimming "effortlessly" is a common misnomer. When you see the speedy swimmers zipping down the lane or across the bay looking effortless, you may not have seen their dedication, discipline and effort getting to that state. #swimswell#happinesscomesinwaves#openwaterswimming#foundations#thecatch#openwatercoaching#triathlontraining#preventinjury#effortlessswimming
Who’s stoked to get a little pool time this weekend?

There’s been a lot of talk about an alleged shark sighting at Kingston Beach this week. Well, just as we were discussing it with my crew this morning (while standing waist-deep at the start of our swim), a little two-foot draughtboard shark beached itself directly behind us. Beautiful creatures! (We popped him back in the water, of course, and away he went).
Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate it when people report shark sightings. Occasionally I’ll get a bit freaked out when I see a big dark shadow or touch something unexpectedly. But those are rare occasions. Mostly the ocean is a place of wonder and beauty for me (...and incredible power, and other-worldly curiosity, etc.) So I’ll be among the first back in the water when I feel the threat-level has returned to normal (which in this case was the morning after the shark sighting 😜).
About a month ago my swim mates almost ALL dumped me to go eat buttery croissants with marmalade.
Today I insured ALL swam.
I brought the croissants, peanut butter, and preserves.
I got my swim buddies. They got their croissants!
