At the end of last year we had an awesome day at Bondi Beach with an adaptive F45 training session at F45 Bondi, then on to Bondi Beach via access mats, in support of, & inspired by, the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. Thanks to Outback Academy Australia (& the awesome Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy) & F45 Bondi we got to smash through a full strength training session full of people of all sorts of abilities. Then Kathleen from Outback Academy, Brendan from the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 team, and myself went down on to the sand of Bondi Beach for a photo with the Invictus Flag and a huge group of athletes and supporters. Well, my Dad would journal my races and take photos. He gifted them to me when I graduated, I think. The below is one of many. It's crazy how this old entry is pretty much a metaphor for my life now with autoimmune disease, chronic pain, and triathlon. It also explains alot about how/why I have a strong mind over matter ability - it's because my parents believed in me, even when I didnt believe in myself. They instilled it in me all those years ago, not knowing the challenges I would face or the person I'd become. So grateful for these parents of mine💫... Dad's race recap... "Humungous crowd for this one. 30 schools, but it seemed like a million bodies. Dads pride was off to another good start as hundreds of motivated runners climbed up the never ending incline and into running history. Maintaining her calculated pace, Dina burned up the course, making mince meat of all she was passing. Dina was also filled with enthusiasm as she breathlessly crossed over the rickity narrow bridge and upward to the final stretch past her cheering Mom and Dad. A glimpse of pain was noticed by Dad coming from his aspiring young athlete but she kept pushing up the treacherous hill. Grueling pain of this young gazelle could not prevent her from capturing a magnificent 50th of 200. Instructions Preheat oven to 325F (163C). Mix protein and applesauce until smooth. Add almond meal and baking powder. Mix well. Fold in chocolate chips. Spoon onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. What happened when I dropped my diet restrictions and started eating a balanced diet? NOTHING. If anything, trying to maintain a perfect low fat vegan diet that I successfully used to help heal my autoimmune disease was making me sick. Mentally, I still felt sick because I was “restricted” in my diet. So when I allowed myself more foods, mainly healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocado, and coconut, and more cooked veggies and less fruit, my energy levels sky rocketed, working out became fun again, and I got my period back! So while there’s a time to cleanse, there’s also a time to find balance and to enjoy food. Food is nourishment for the body, mind, and spirit. Restriction in any way has NEVER felt good for me, and I really don’t recommend it to people unless you are extremely ill and need a period of detoxification. But living that way isn’t sustainable and no one should think there’s an ideal diet to maintain for life. So now I can eat whatever I want with no arthritis flares, but I gravitate towards whole plant foods because they make me feel my best!! It’s similar to the way I allow myself to drink alcohol but choose not to, I like getting good quality sleep and waking up with energy to workout and start my day! I allow myself desserts but choose fruit or tea most of the time because that makes me feel much better after. So I want to encourage you to do as Michael Pollan says and “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Let me know what your experiences are with dieting, cleansing, or restricting. Food is made for nourishment, God gave it to as a gift, not as punishment or something we constantly have to focus on. EATING FOR SATIETY VS FULLNESS. Fullness and satiety are closely tied. You want to eat a good amount/variety of veggies, but there’s a point of overdoing it that’s no longer healthy. I don’t know if you guys do this, but I often seek fullness over satiety, choosing a large volume of low-calorie food rather than an equal energy amount of denser food. If you prefer the latter but feel compelled to select the former, that is disordered. If you fear you won’t be full from the smaller portion, remind yourself that you’re always allowed to eat more food. Likely, you will be more satisfied from the smaller, denser potion since it’s what you wanted. - I have a habit of watering down my soup and adding tons of steamed veggies to make it ‘more’. Trying to trick my body into fullness instead of just eating more of the higher calorie soup. But often it doesn’t even resemble the food I originally sought and doesn’t satisfy me. Yesterday I wanted chili. Instead of adding a ton of water and veggies I just prepared the chili as it came (although I still added a tiny bit of water bc it was thickkk) and topped it with vegan cheese and avocado and it was so delicious and perfectly satisfying. - @amyskitchen black bean chili, with a @fieldroast sliced + grilled vegan frankfurter, served alongside an @alvaradostreetbakery sprouted grain tortilla with mashed avo. 😋🥑 - On another note, without any scientific backing, I’ve noticed that people who ‘bulk’ with veggies (myself included) often struggle with IBS symptoms. This is a restrictive behavior regardless of whether or not a calorie deficit is present. - Do you bulk with low calorie foods even if it’s not what you truly want to eat (being 💯 percent honest with yourself?) Recently, I’ve had a lot of people asking me what I eat to stay fit. The truth? I love doughnuts, I love cookies, I eat chocolate at least once a day... but the key is balance. Here are some things I live by: • 🔥 Every workout, you should feel breathless at some point. I’m not talking exhausted the whole time, but if you never push your limits, your limits don’t grow, resulting in stagnant results. The goal is to do something 1% better every single workout. 🔥 Combine cardio & strength. The age old myth of lifting weights making you bulky is simply BULLSH🤬T. The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn. That’s what muscle does. So lift some heavy things sometimes, but get that cardio in. CONDITIONING CONDITIONING CONDITIONING! 🔥 Abs are made in the kitchen, and animal products do build layers on top of your muscles. As a vegan athlete, once I committed to a full vegan diet, I dropped weight and shredded fat INSTANTLY. I’m not a preachy vegan that tells everyone to change their diet, but it’s healthy to sub out some dairy & some meats. I promise you will see a change in your body, and once you see positive changes, it gets addicting. 🔥 TREAT YOSELF - all in moderation tho 🙃 eat the cookie, the doughnut, the chocolate, the garlic bread. Whatever that thing is. Do it. Don’t deprive yourself. • Moral of the story: you can eat almost whatever you want if you work your ass off. The harder you work, the better you feel. The better you feel, the less you wanna fill your body with sh!t. Your body gets accustomed to the work you put in and you keep pushing harder from there. Gave this #vegantuna a try from @kindred.vegan.souls. It is delicious! Great protein and lots of plants makes this a great post workout recovery meal. So many athletes want to focus on macros and although there is a place for that, they must also think about how to clean up their insides from the oxidative stress and damage that happens BECAUSE of the workout. The antioxidants and phytonutrients found in plants are the only real way to accomplish this clean up!
