Barbed wire pigtail at the Mort Homme
———————————————————————— Shown here is a barbed wire pigtail found on the ground at the Mort Homme on the left bank a Verdun. In French service these types of picket screw were known as ‘queue de cochon’, or pigtail. That it still remains is testament to the months of bloody fighting on the left bank of the Meuse that began in late February 1916. Prior to the beginning of the Battle of Verdun, Falkenhayn, the German overalls commander, had been warned he needed to attack on both sides of the Meuse river but had ignored this advice. The result was that German forces on the right bank came under enfilade fire from the French batteries around the Mort Homme. Over the next few months bitter fighting occurred, centred on the two dominant hills, Côte 304 and the Mort Homme. Côte 304 had to be taken first as it dominated the approaches to the Mort Homme. It fell at the beginning of May. With the approaches under German control, Mort Homme was doomed and would fall by the end of May with bitter fighting. In advancing, the Germans first took Côte 265, which was marked on their maps as he crest, but in actual fact Côte 295 beyond was the summit of the Mort Homme. The furthest the Germans advanced was the village of Cumières-le-Mort Homme, which fell on 24 May 1916. (Taken October 2018)

In 2001 the international custodians of the peace process prepared, funded and facilitated the suffering heaped on the Tamil people. They pointed their fingers at the LTTE as the problem. They weren’t brave enough to take on Sinhala chauvinism - the real culprit.
In 2009 as the lion stared into their faces - the international agencies bowed to its ferocity and asked Tamils to do the same. They gave us the option to die on our feet or to live on our knees.
Exercice Falcon Amarante 2018
Where are they now, our admired heroes, close friends or our young loves? Our time with them was taken away. Listening to certain songs now brings forth old memories and lets it squat strongly in the fore of our mind. Where is the patrolman we lost to murder, the Marine we lost to war, the mother we lost to cancer, the wife we lost to separation, or the girl we lost to another man? Some are gone because of some tragedy or an occurrence that was as simple as a simple goodbye. How odd is it that a song can uncoil so much of what was wrapped tightly inside of us? Our heart holds a spool of finite emotion that unwinds as a song plays, and like an old record album that ends when the needle falls off the track, our emotion ends too. But while the song ends something new occurs and we might not be ready for the transformative effect the sirens power has on us. Our fine and vulnerable thread is drawn from our heart like a trembling wire and even a dandelion flower dancing upon it could make us crumble. The nerve exposed, those raw feelings, feels tangible. Despite our heart protesting loudly we really don't want to stop that loss. Though it is a loss we cannot control, it is a pain we want to suffer, and there are sensations and memories we want to recall for far longer than that magic, piercing sting of music and words will last. This can be a dangerous thing to those with a fragile heart for it can reframe our current sensibility and pull from us some latent feelings we didn't know rested in our soul. Every song out there is different for everyone of us. Yes, many songs from singers do capture heartache and loss. Leonard Cohen, Chet Baker or maybe songs from singers like Diana Ross and the Supremes Reflections. Good writers and singers create things that feel visceral and elegant and can pierce us deeply! Oh deeply! Maybe they don't suit your taste. I simply posit that through our hurting we will have a life better lived and a loss better embraced. Pain sometimes helps us work to finally understand a loss. Let some healing begin and a good conclusion happen. It's something you owe to yourself if it's not also something you owe to their memory. 🇬🇧Iran-Rome Wars_ The Roman's side of the story:
The Byzantine attack at the village of Anglon in Armenia (543), which was opposed by 4000 Iranians. These latter were heavily outnumbered, so entrenched the town, blocked streets with carts, and filled some old cabins with ambuscades of infantry. Some Eruli and Byzantines after a hard hand-to-hand struggle routed the front lines, and pursued the fleeing Iranians. Their pursuit ran into an ambush, where enemy archery broke them in turn. Chased by Iranians, they fled to the rest of their army, causing its rout.
