My name is Samgna Magar and I’m from Dholkha. I had a love marriage when I was 21 years old. I came to Kathmandu when I was 13 years old and met my husband.
My husband works in construction and carries concrete but, after some years he stop supporting me and my daughter, Sangita. My husband has another wife and he does not stay with me at home any longer, I don't know if he was really in love with me. This makes my life very hard. I cannot marry another man, but he is allowed to marry again.
The women’s situation in my home village is not good. Women are totally opposite to men and there are so many rules. Men ask women many questions like ‘why have you gone there?’ and ‘why do you do that?’. I even have to ask permission from the men to go somewhere.
These rules aren’t the same for the men. I am not happy to be a woman, because if I was a man I would be able to manage my life how I want it to be. Men tell me to stop when I want to live my life how I want. There is so much control over women and I am sad about this.

This beautiful family here in Dbn on holiday and they so excited to see a female lifeguard on our beachfront and I was so flattered by their compliments. It is people that make me push further and fight the odds even though sometimes being here as a lifeguard gets tough being a Female!!! I love my job and I’m really good at it but sometimes I wonder if it is all worth the Agony of always trying to get the same benefits and rights as the Men on our beachfronts. Some days are just Hard to fight a system that never acknowledged Women as part of it. Over R150 Men and 1 female. The odds against me are sometimes overwhelming!!! As much as a wicked workout can never out beat a bad diet, a wicked diet can never out beat a toxic mind and heart. .
Yes it’s important to support your body this way, but until you get messy and dive head first into the muck you feed your head and heart, you’re going to remain unbalanced and out of whack. .
The mirror was a constant battle for me for yearsss! It didn’t matter how well I ate, how insanely I worked out, how small my clothes got... I still looked in the mirror and saw pain. I saw failure and disappointment. I saw imperfect and unworthy. .
It wasn’t until I started digging deeper into those thoughts and beliefs that I started to understand where these lies were coming from. Or even being able to identify them as lies in the first place. .
It doesn’t happen over night and it’s going to be some of the toughest work you’ve ever done. I’m still putting in work, I still have ups and downs but I’m now at peace with that. If you truly want to soar through your goals and find happiness, love and fulfillment on the other side...pick up that mirror. .

I just want to give you a little reminder that you’re not *really* scared of what other people think. You’re scared of getting more evidence to support what YOU think. You’re scared you’ll be rejected and abandoned. And the only reason you’re scared of any of that is because you don’t want to feel the shame that would follow 🙈
Brené Brown talks about shame as the fear of disconnection: “I define shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging – something we've experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection.” This is what we’re trying to avoid 💭
Shame is completely unavoidable unless you’re a sociopath and have no desire for human connection - it’s a universal emotion that we are DESIGNED to feel 🙃
Lately, I’ve found it helpful to remind myself that I’m not actually scared of what other people think or how they’ll react to what I do. I’m just scared of shame - which is just a physical vibration in my body. A physical vibration that I’ve been able to survive many times in the past and will survive in the future too 💪🏼
A lot of the advice about not caring about what other people think doesn’t get to the heart of it. Intellectually knowing that you shouldn’t be scared of judgement isn’t enough to override our subconscious belief that we must avoid the pain of shame at all costs 🙅🏻♀️
And it’s natural to want to avoid it - there are studies that have shown that the emotional pain of shame registers in our brain in the same way that physical pain does. But it’s ok, it’s just a vibration. And if you’re going to feel it throughout your life regardless, you may as well be a person who’s up to something. That’s what I say to myself anyway!
